Special delivery for the Learning Centre

Earlier this year, VCAL students from Victory Lutheran College visited the Learning Centre as part of a special work experience. They returned in October with a a special delivery for the participants at the Learning Centre.

As part of their two afternoons at the Learning Centre, the students had the opportunity to meet with participants and staff and get to know them. They completed a range of activities with the participants and chatted to the staff about working in the disability industry.

Each student wrote an short biography to introduce themselves to the participants, including Victory Lutheran College teacher Rachael Fenselau, who mentioned her 30 alpacas at her home. This interested the participants who regularly saw Alpacas on a property on their way to the Albury tip. Rachael decided to bring in a spinning wheel in the last session for the participants to learn how to use the wool and spin it.

The participants enjoyed the experience so much the students decided to donate a spinning wheel to the Learning Centre. Back in class the students were given a second hand spinning wheel and with their skills in woodwork, fixed and polished it ready to present to the participants.

On Wednesday October 17, the students alongside teacher Rachael visited the Learning Centre to present the donated spinning wheel. The Learning Centre participants and staff were very happy to receive it and can’t wait to use it regularly.

As a extra surprise Rachael brought in two of her Alpacas – Neptune and Raggamuffin – from her home for the participants to meet. The participants, especially Bradley, really enjoyed patting and spending time with the animals.

Rachael is already looking forward to bringing a new group of VCAL students to visit Mercy Connect in 2019.

Mercy Connect CEO, Damian Lacey expressed “With the NDIS, demand for workers is growing, so if young people are having a positive experience in this sector, that’s a huge positive.”
